We have been raising pygmy goats since 1997. We started out with two pygmy goats my father in-law bought my daughter Brittany and son Zachery when we moved out to the country on our five acre home here in Scappoose. I was shaking my head wondering what he was getting me into. Turns out that was the best gift he ever gave us. My father in-law passed in the spring of 2010, and I made sure he knew how much that gift meant to all of us.
The kids started showing in 4H and we needed a name for our club. At the time we were doing rabbits, Poultry, cavy's, pigeons, sheep, and later a cow, so we had to have something that included all of them, hence "creatures". Brittany turned out to be an exceptional showman and pygmy goats became her favorite project, but we had a hard time finding anyone to help us with improving our herd. Zachery was a great showman too and loved the goats, but never got it in his blood like Brittany. He loved showing poultry the most, but dropped out of 4H a few years after the poultry project began to make you walk a chicken down a table; which he thought was idiotic since you don't walk a chicken like that on a farm. That was it for him.
Brittany and I expanded our herd to six, not including babies born on the farm, but never did outstanding in conformation, they were still "4H" goats with the long legs, and dairy body. We started improving the herd when Brittany graduated in 2006 ; she missed showing in 4H and convinced me to start showing with her in sanction shows, which meant we had to downsize the herd to only registered pygmy's, and quickly look for good stock. We quickly went from six to twelve goats and showed in only a few shows that year in NPGA sanction shows, and came in dead last. The difference was, the people at the sanction shows were so kind and helpful about how to improve our herd, that we are very proud of our herd today, and quickly started to be in the top of the classes in only two years. We now have anywhere between 16-25 goats at a time, and love it.
Unfortunately Brittany has not been able to spend much time with her four legged friends because of working full time and going to school full time; but hopefully some day in the future she will show along side with me again as they have really become a big part of our lives and can always make us smile.
Married since 1987, daughter Brittany, and son Zachery. Photographer, artist, writer, 4H leader for Columbia County Oregon since 1999, and Master gardener. Started substituting as a teachers aide in 2008 after being a stay at home mom for 20 years, but want to do more with my art and photography. Also own two Rottweilers, five cats, and a assortment of chickens. Love to hike, camp, and explore new places. Feed stores and flea markets are favorite hang outs, and you can always find me in the barn sitting in my chair hanging with the does.
